Guide

Music festivals in India.

India's major music festivals are NH7 Weekender (indie and alternative), Sunburn (EDM), Ziro Festival of Music (Arunachal Pradesh), Magnetic Fields (electronic, Rajasthan), Lollapalooza India (Mumbai) and Echoes of Earth (Bengaluru). Indiestaan, run by GIFLIF, programmes independent multilingual acts in Bhopal and Gurugram.

A working guide rather than a ranking. Which festival is “best” depends entirely on whether you want a stadium headliner, a valley in Arunachal, or a room where you can actually hear the band.

Indiestaan

Ours. Independent, multilingual acts, staged in cities the touring circuit skips. Lucky Ali played to 8,000 people in Bhopal; Bloodywood, Indian Ocean, Thaikkudam Bridge, Parvaaz, Rabbi Shergill and Kabir Cafe have all played it.

Ours

How they differ, honestly

  • Scale versus intimacy. Lollapalooza and Sunburn bring the biggest names and crowds. Magnetic Fields and Ziro cap numbers on purpose.
  • Where they are. Most cluster around Mumbai, Pune, Goa and Bengaluru. Ziro, Hornbill and Indiestaan exist partly because that leaves most of the country out.
  • What they programme. EDM, indie, electronic and folk barely overlap in audience. “Best” is not one list — it is four.
  • When they run. October to January, which is why so many collide.

Where Indiestaan fits

Indiestaan is not bigger than NH7 Weekender and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is a smaller, independent festival built on one idea: India's independent scene is genuinely multilingual, and most of it never tours past a handful of metros. So we put those artists in front of audiences in cities the circuit skips — and they turn out. Lucky Ali's Bhopal show drew 8,000 people, one of the largest ticketed music crowds the city has had.

Questions we get asked

What is the biggest music festival in India?

By attendance and headliner scale, Sunburn and Lollapalooza India are the largest. NH7 Weekender is the most established name in indie and alternative programming.

Which Indian music festival is best for independent music?

NH7 Weekender is the largest platform for independent artists. Ziro Festival of Music and Magnetic Fields are smaller and more curated. Indiestaan, run by GIFLIF, programmes independent and multilingual acts specifically in cities outside the main touring circuit, such as Bhopal.

When is festival season in India?

Most major Indian music festivals run between October and January, after the monsoon and before peak summer. Ziro is the main exception, in September.

Can a brand or city start its own music festival?

Yes, and a growing number do rather than sponsoring someone else's. GIFLIF builds festival IPs for brands, colleges and government bodies under their own name — the same way it built Indiestaan for itself.

Thinking about building one?

We built Indiestaan from nothing. If you want your own festival rather than a sponsor slot on someone else's, that is the whole job we do.
